Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has defended Sammy Gyamfi's recent apology concerning a viral video in which Gyamfi is seen giving $800 to Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
In the video, Gyamfi is observed handing over the cash to Agradaa, an act that has sparked significant public discourse and criticism. Addressing the controversy, Gyamfi clarified that the gesture was a private act of kindness, stating, "I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable." He further expressed remorse to party members who felt hurt by the incident, saying, "To all such comrades, I AM SINCERELY SORRY for this unfortunate act of indiscretion."
Basintale, supporting Gyamfi's position, emphasized that the apology was appropriate and that Gyamfi's intentions were not malicious. He highlighted the importance of understanding the context and urged party members to focus on unity and the broader objectives of the NDC.
The incident has elicited varied reactions within the political landscape. While some, like Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu, have defended Gyamfi, asserting that he committed no crime and attributing the backlash to political adversaries, others, such as Captain (Rtd) Nkrabea Effah Dartey, have called for disciplinary action against Gyamfi to set a precedent.
As discussions continue, the NDC leadership faces the task of addressing internal concerns while maintaining party cohesion ahead of future political engagements.
